Marta Dyczok on the revival of Hromadske Radio's 'Ukraine Calling' program
The 1st and latest episode of Brian Bonner's "Ukraine Calling" program on Hromadske Radio was released on Friday, March 15, 2024.
Brian Bonner’s 1st episode of “Ukraine Calling,” the weekly program on Hromadske Radio, is available on YouTube, the radio’s website, and wherever you get your podcasts. This week’s guest is Marta Dyczok, a political science and history associate professor at Western University in Canada. She talks about founding the “Ukraine Calling” program in 2016. Dyczok hosted the first 128 episodes of the program until 2019. (Editor’s Note: There have been 157 episodes as of April 12, 2024.) Reflecting on the program's origins, Marta emphasizes the pressing need to sustain public engagement amidst the ongoing war in Ukraine. "I think the challenge now is to keep the story in people's attention," she remarks. "Because the war, it's just the same sort of reporting of more shelling or attacks on civilian targets. That story has been told many times. It needs to continue being told. But I think the challenge is how to make it interesting." During our conversation, we delve into various topics, including the evolving media landscape, the necessity of consistent English-language coverage, the importance of showcasing both the macro and micro stories of Ukraine and the impact of the war on a global scale.
