Ukraine, 7 years ago
A glimpse at the cover show the promise and setbacks then. How is it different now?
Kyiv Post chief editor Brian Bonner summarized the July 28, 2017, edition, which can be read here in PDF format:
Good news, bad news:
Ukraine rejoices over the U.S. Congress' overwhelming support for tougher sanctions against Russia and lawmakers' clear message to the Kremlin and U.S. President Donald J. Trump: Sanctions will stay in place as punishment for Russia's interference in America's 2016 presidential election and until the Kremlin reverses course in Ukraine, ending its war and returning Crimea.
The bad news came on the domestic front with what many see as President Petro Poroshenko carrying out a pure political vendetta in suspending ex-Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili's Ukrainian citizenship. This, coupled with harassment of anti-corruption activists and an obstructed reform agenda, will not go down well at home or abroad.
We've got more reporting from the war front and an update on the U.S. federal criminal case against exiled oligarch Dmytro Firtash.
Also, a big announcement: We have revived the expanded two-page format for the Entertainment Guide. So we have lots of calendar listings full of fun events for your free time.
The Business Focus is interesting and a first, as far as I can recall in my 9 years as chief editor: the need for due diligence in real estate transactions. We have plenty of advice from experts.
And more. Thanks for supporting the Kyiv Post! Here are some places where you can pick up the print edition around Ukraine:
Now 'a bit grumpy Brian' was actually one of the best chief newsroom editors in Ukraine. I was there. I saw that.
