I am pro Ukraine but have a tidbit of history to share. Around 1994 or so I met a man from Ukraine (only remember his nickname -“Sasha”.)

When I first met him he had a job at CBC Radio Canada. He explained he was a translator when in the military and was fluent in Ukrainian, Russian, and French, but spoke no English. One day he was very excited about a new well paid job he got. He had met two men from the Quebec government and they adored him because he spoke no English (anti English sentiment in Quebec). They hired him to go stay in Ukraine and teach Ukrainians the Quebec methods of suppressing language. After I saw him again about say 8 months later, I asked him what he did. His example was that initially, due to resentment over Holomodor, Ukrainian officials went to libraries and gathered Russian language books and burned them leading to international complaints. The “Quebec” way was to cut the budget in winter temporarily, then inspect, declare the books a mold health hazard, then burn them. Replace only with Ukrainian language books. He agreed this was a petty act against ethnic Russians (often third generation), but was very happy for the high salary. Sent along with him were various young people from Quebec universities, and he made one pregnant and this scandal ended his assignment as he was considered a sort of assistant professor hence not supposed to be involved with the students. This story is consistent with complaints of suppression of ethnic Russians and these acts were leveraged “Sudetenland style” by Putin.

Supporter of Kyiv Independent 💪 Marta I must sincerely congratulate you for teaching your students critical thinking! Boomers (like me, anyway),know a thing or two about that, as well as the lost art of skillful debate. Agree with Grumpy Old Man Canada needs to commit to our NATO allies. I'm a Canadian who remembers when GI Joe was taken off the market because the thought was war was over at last. I believe Canada began reducing military expence around then, and to some extent the US as well. We got into "peace keeping" which made us look good, but glossed over our serious lack of military backbone. Times have changed so much. My dad was a proud Ukrainian. He never taught us the language (married an Irish girl), but definitely a few songs, and of course the food.

I may have missed a link to how to purchase Marta's book. If I missed the link, my apologies. If I didn't, could you provide one? Thanks.
