GUEST POST: A Ukrainian historian and Kharkiv native tells Putin and Trump to stop claiming that they alone won WWII, and instead start respecting the victims and the heroes.
Thank you for a reasoned reasonable approach to a subject usually weighted down with either hubris or horror. I was one of those who encouraged the Reagan White House to acknowledge the Soviet role even as he honored the βBoys of Pointe du Hocβ
From one reality-denying propagandist to another. Quoting from that article "The Nation" (founded as "The Liberator" by William Lloyd Garrison):
"These stories of Ukraineβs dark nationalism arenβt coming out of Moscow; theyβre being filed by Western media, including US-funded Radio Free Europe (RFE); Jewish organizations such as the World Jewish Congress and the Simon Wiesenthal Center; and watchdogs like Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and Freedom House, which issued a joint report warning that Kiev is losing the monopoly on the use of force in the country as far-right gangs operate with impunity."
Far-right gangs "operated with impunity" as their political boss --Arsen Avakov -- controlled the police as Interior Minister. Porter is acting as an apologist for hate-filled far-right thuggish terror.
The new American Pope just spouted the Establishment party line regarding Ukraine. I condemned this with a detailed explanation (including sources) on this Twitter thread:
Remembering Pete Reed, an American hero among many in this Russo-Ukrainian War. His widow Alex Potter did an interview with TGM: βPete was so gregarious, you know. He was loud and proud and wild, and I think part of that was his personality He definitely knew how to lead and how to take charge of people, which was both amazing for our medical work β and very attractive to me. He had like a heart of gold underneath. And it wasn't just in the field.β πͺπ Full story: https://tinyurl.com/ydc9wpef
As a historian, I have to firmly disagree with Tetiana Krupa's reference to the Budapest Memorandum, basing my disagreement on the same principle that President George Washington used when he decided that the treaty of alliance with France was null and void. That treaty was made with the French monarchical regime that was overthrown by the French Revolution, vitiating the treaty. By the same token, the U.S.-supported Maidan Revolution vitiated the Budapest Memorandum: My country rendered the memorandum null and void by installing a far-right thug regime in Ukraine:
Your remarks demonstrate complete ignorance of how Ukraine lives as a country and how we, its citizens, perceive our country, cities, villages, water, and air. My homeland is now under enemy occupation; I will never visit the graves of my ancestors; I will not bring my grandchildren there. Instead of condemning the aggressor who destroys with all his fascist power and hatred for Ukrainians, no matter what language they speak, you justify these aggressors. It seems that this is now called a fashionable word, "whataboutism." This word means a special psychological technique to distract attention from the main reason or to settle accounts with something that seems hostile to you. I assure you that you are using false, unreliable, and also outdated information and are acting with the intention of hiding the aggressor's actions aimed at completely destroying Ukraine and restoring the soviet regime, which place is in a scrapyard. You look like not a scientist but a collector of random events under a concept reminiscent of conspiracy theories.
Yes, we have a lot of problems in the country. But judging by what you write, I don't see that you can understand them. Everything you wrote is aimed not at supporting a country that is bleeding from real Nazis, but at creating an image of Ukraine as an enemy of humanity. It hurts and is a shame for you. And this is a Lie.
There is no far right-wing regime in Ukraine. We have a normal state with the whole spectrum of public movements. Our so-called nationalists do not gain more than 1.5 percent in parliamentary elections, they are not there at all. Stop working for rashist falsifications.
Ukraine is an artificial state, cobbled together by arbitrary Soviet decisions. Zelensky has suppressed ALL opposition parties and seized their TV stations, and then he still squats in power after his term has ended. Calling Ukraine a "normal state is absurd, especially with it's well-documented far-right thug terror:
"These stories of Ukraineβs dark nationalism arenβt coming out of Moscow; theyβre being filed by Western media, including US-funded Radio Free Europe (RFE); Jewish organizations such as the World Jewish Congress and the Simon Wiesenthal Center; and watchdogs like Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and Freedom House, which issued a joint report warning that Kiev is losing the monopoly on the use of force in the country as far-right gangs operate with impunity."
The quote is from that article from "The Nation" that I linked. The political boss of Ukraine's pre-war terror regime was far-right Interior Minister Arsen Avakov, in charge of the police stations. It is no accident that the Donbass rebellion began with outraged citizens sacking and burning police stations.
The key figure in Ukraine's descent into neo-Nazi thuggish terror was Arsen Avakov, the political boss of the far right who became Interior Minister, IN CHARGE OF THE POLICE STATIONS.
John, why don't you at least TRY to listen to what Tetiana Krupa and Nataliia (and others like myself who actually KNOW Ukraine) are telling you? Just TRY....?
Grumpy old men and paid propagandists resolutely refuse to engage with the damning report in the linked article from βThe Nationβ entitled βNeo-Nazis and the Far Right on the March in Ukraine.β Quoting from that article:
βThese stories of Ukraineβs dark nationalism arenβt coming out of Moscow; theyβre being filed by Western media, including US-funded Radio Free Europe (RFE); Jewish organizations such as the World Jewish Congress and the Simon Wiesenthal Center; and watchdogs like Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and Freedom House, which issued a joint report warning that Kiev is losing the monopoly on the use of force in the country as far-right gangs operate with impunity.β
You really said that Ukraine has a one-party far-right terror regime? What do Putin and his murderous thugs - the true terrorists - give you to say that?
Porter, you eilfully ignore the evidence in the western sources that I've provided as you descend into neo-McCarthyist character assassination. Whose payroll are you on?
Thank you for a reasoned reasonable approach to a subject usually weighted down with either hubris or horror. I was one of those who encouraged the Reagan White House to acknowledge the Soviet role even as he honored the βBoys of Pointe du Hocβ
Thank you. Would love to hear more about the Reagan WH on this question.
Thank you for this, Tetiana. You make a good point.
There need to be more intelligent, knowledgeable voices speaking out about what is being done to Ukraine by its terrorist, imperialist neighbor.

Where is Porter in this story?

You give a blanket dismissal without engaging with my argument and sources regarding Ukraine's far-right terror regime:

My point is that Ukraine's current one-party far-right terror regime is NOT the same government that was party to the Budapest Memorandum.
